Have also tried Mplayer as looked like would work after upgrade too but it has not been made to work for 2.2 as far as I know.
This Thread mentions the 1.9 version and a 2.0 version beta, but not seen any mention so far of a 2.2 version to try.
Have you tried uploading the MP4 video file within a Page or label using the Moodle media button? MoodlePlays it back once linked to.
